How well do you move?

Understanding and balancing the basic quality of our movement is fundamental to preventing and rehabilitating our aches, pains and injuries. Our bodies have intelligent protective mechanisms, which prioritise survival. As well as this, our brain stores movement sequences according to the demands we place and have previously placed on our body.

Each day, our communication between our brain and neuromuscular system allows us to be supported in the positions or patterns we use most frequently. So if there is a stressor on our body such as chronic overuse, this leads us to some form of compensation. Our body will adapt its movement patterns in order to carry out those certain tasks. In other words…

Your body’s communication system will reduce mobility and use of those areas to protect you. Your brain will help your body choose an alternative movement pattern.

Are you compounding your less than functional movement patterns?

Unfortunately when we get stuck in alternative or bad movement patterns we can experience chronic problems. Our muscles become weak and less mobile as our brain continues to respond to signals of pain or fatigue sent from the neuromuscular system. The consequences of these adaptations can lead to a continued avoidance of using those tissues that are signalling stress. This can then lead to a vicious cycle of long periods of less than functional movement, over compensation.

This leads to us compounding the problem by taking painkillers and pushing on in our faulty movement patterns! Movement, injury prevention and rehabilitation are not complicated. We simply have to create a balance to support our movement patterns.
